SAN JOSE, CA (11/8)- Korean-American musicians gathered at the Korean Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in San Jose in an effort to help raise funds for Ukrainian refugees, with a concert that had close to 250+ people in attendance. According to their website, “ Korean Emmanuel Presbyterian Church exists to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever. We do this in worship, growing disciples to make disciples and going to live and serve in this world as reflections of God’s grace. We look forward to meeting with you as we walk in and after His joy as one body!”

Lee Mirwan, SFKorean.com, stated, “The Korean American Autoharp Association (KAAG) held a charity auto-harp concert to help Ukrainian refugee children on November 5 at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in the presence of 200 people.

This charity concert is a fundraising concert to help Ukrainian refugee children living in foreign countries because of war. After delivering the heartfelt donations you gave and the donations collected at the site to relevant organizations, we will transparently disclose where they will be used.”

The concert, hosted by Ray Choi, the founder of KAAG, was attended by people from all over the United States, from as far away as Maryland, Virginia and Northern California, and captivating the audience with an unfamiliar but familiar tone.

KAAG is expanding the base of Autoharp by providing online lectures in a way that local leaders lead the team. According to their website, “The Korean American Autoharp Group (KAAG) dreams together and plays with emotion. Through the original playing method and systematic training course with the identity of auto harp, which is called the piano in the mountains as a traditional American instrument, we are producing auto harp players and nurturing competent leaders.

Our association (KAAG) is active in valuing the value of service and cooperative community. We learn, play and perform together, but we are creating a bright and hopeful community through music communication by visiting marginalized places, prisons, and nursing homes. Furthermore, in places where there is emotional exhaustion due to the new normal digital age, we are working hard to take a leap forward as GLOBAL KAAG to achieve our vision to change the world with gentle power.

Through various programs provided by the Korea American Auto Harp Association (KAAG), we look forward to peace of mind through 3H sharing happiness with the sound of hugging the harp, the sound of heartfelt, and happiness.

Hesitation is an opportunity. Rather than waiting for a time that will never come, I would like you to take a break now and do Donghae with us. We invite you to a world where we create the hopes and values pursued by the Korea-American Auto Half Association (KAAG) through individual diversity and convergence creativity….”

This charity concert had performances of 'A Whisper of Hope' by Ayeomo (Leader Jun-Hee Hong, San Jose), Schveltiate (Leader Ji-Hye Kim, San Jose), Woollim (Leader Jeong-Gyu Choi, Virginia), Gloria (Leader Sun-Hee Chae, San Jose), and Ainos. Chairman Young-hye Kan recited her poem “Song for Ukraine” stating:

On their homeland,

tears gathered, turned

into a fiery river over

yesterday’s paradise, now an inferno.

Did you see the girl, her eyes closed?

She’d survived the Corona virus but not the bullet,

wails her mother, everything I wanted in this world

were but an empty dream; all I want is my girl.

The endless landmass called Russia—is it

not enough for him? Must he steal

innocent lives and their homes, too?

Dominance by force does not make him a hero.

Even the meanest tigers do not harm the young.

Should his way rule the world, I shall become

a nameless animal in the deep forest.

Open your eyes and see,

perk up your ears and listen.

The bombing that began with force

must be ended by force.

Please hear my prayers, O Lord, and

help them recover their land

free of tears stained with despair!

Let them rise again!

-Yeong Kang

After Ray Choi's solo performance, Ken Song's guitar solo made a rainy autumn night into the music. Finally, Sejong Korean School (Leader Jun-hee Hong) students and teachers performed Spring in their hometown, and the concert ended with all the attendees….”

According to his website, Ray Choi was “Born and Raised in South Korea where he first nurtured his musical talent, Ray immigrated to the United States over 25 years ago. He originally supported himself selling Oscar Schmidt autoharps and in the process became one of the company’s top distributors. Eventually, Ray and his wife Jane opened Grace Music in Garden Grove, California, where they specialize in selling autoharps, violins and cellos. They have even managed to pass on their love of music to their son who tours across the United States and Asia.

Ray is justifiably famous for developing his “Hummingbird Tremolo,” an original technique that Ray has mastered over a period of many years of hard practice. The tremolo effect is achieved through a fast fluttering movement of the fingertips once thought impossible to achieve on the autoharp. In the process, Ray has added a new dimension to advanced autoharp playing and enriched the range of the instrument….” Ray Choi is 3 time autoharp award winner and champion, who has co-authored “Hal Leonard Autoharp Method” with Hal Leonard which has been described as, “Designed for anyone just learning to play the autoharp, this comprehensive and easy-to-use beginner's guide serves as an introduction to the autoharp and its techniques. The accompanying videos, available online for download or streaming, feature demonstrations of songs and exercises throughout the book. Topics covered include: tuning * strumming techniques * beginning melody playing * chord-hand positions * right and left hand exercises * major scales * melody aids * and much more….”
